Workforce Development: Session 11 focusses on how the role of the archivist is changing in the modern era along with the links the archivist has with society generally. These changes will impact on the skills the archivist will require in this new world. The approach in the session is to look at these aspects of using disabled people to digitise records at; the overall skills required by a modern audio-visual archivist; and developing skills for modern digital management practices.

Evolving Identities: The modern AV Archivist

>

Audio-visual archivists inhabit a niche area of the archival community. Our collections are relatively young, compared to object and paper-based collections, and demonstrate the fast-moving pace of technology through ever changing formats. Our collections encompass everything from 19th century photographic collections and Hollywood blockbusters to candid home movies and filtered Instagram posts.
AV material is created and used by millions of people to communicate, engage, and learn every day. The amount of content created across multiple platforms is overwhelming. In the face of this deluge, how do we as archivists ensure we filter, assess, and collect relevant material for our collections? How do we capture the material and all its contextual data with future preservation needs in mind? And how do we manage the risk of software and hardware obsolescence to future proof this material?
These are all issues that the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) are contending with in our journey to becoming a fully digital agency that pays appropriate respect to our analogue heritage.
This presentation discusses the professional identity of an AV archivist and the skillset required to manage these archival collections.
