Hope Activated - Climate Ethics and Archives in an Age of Urgency

>

At the 2021 Brisbane ASA conference Hart gave a paper titled Hope in the Anthropocene, Connecting to Archival Long Game. This asked what our responsibility as archivists is to ensure that records, and also the planet will still be around in 500 years. It questioned what role sustainability and climate ethics play, and how we can influence our institutions to place these things front and center when planning for digital preservation, system development and repository management.
Since 2021 Hart has been collaborating with colleagues in archives and climate science to test what collaboration might look like, and will be sharing some stories about this. Key to this is activating climate data within our collections that might be hidden to research scientist, by developing climate focused finding aids and applying a new lens to our appraisal activity.
