Continuum in a Microcosm: Consensus, expertise and doubt for developing an archival collection

>

The City of Sydney hosts a complete records microcosm: records are created in the course of City business, flowing from line of business through records systems, managed by information managers, wrangled by data managers, inspected by auditors, disposed of by in-house archivists, and eventually consumed by our in-house historians.
In this multivariate feedback loop, each part of the system informs and shapes the implementation of the others.
With the attention to federal grants administration over the course of the recent election cycle, it’s easy to overlook the lasting positive impact of local government grants programs. The City administered over $21 million worth of grants in 2020/21. This paper delves into how grants records traverse the records continuum, with insights and perspectives from our grants team, archivists and historians.
Key issues explored
• Assessing archival significance in line with the State-issued disposal authority
• Preserving context across time and multiple systems
• Nudging business operations for archival purposes.
Learn how we evolved our management of grants records for both integrity and posterity.
