Going digital at school – challenges and opportunities in the school archives

This panel discussion will comprise three professional representatives of different areas of practice within the school archives sphere in Australia, with areas of discussion including the challenges of preservation for evidential school records and the influence of the findings of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, the implications of going digital, digital systems, planning, platforms and discoverability, and the pros and cons of digitisation for records, images and objects. Each member of the panel with give a short presentation for approximately 20 minutes, including visual content, with 30 minutes allowed for discussion within the panel and in response to questions from the audience.
ROS MALONE: Retention and Disposal for digital school records, defensible note-taking records, social media incident records, valid consent records, obligations and best-practice recordkeeping for Schools, and the recordkeeping rights of the child.
KATE PULFORD: Inventories, surveys, and the implications of going digital, professional skills and abilities, digital systems in the school archive, acquisition and implementation issues, digitisation planning, digital platforms, communication and engagement, and discoverability and digital life-cycles.
PAUL MISHURA: The pros and cons of digitising a large school archive, to digitise or not digitise, and in-house versus out-sourcing digitising. Digitising museum objects for online and/or in-house display for preservation, and the risks and challenges associated with server or cloud storage.
