The Tandanya Adelaide Declaration was presented by the International Council on Archives Expert Group on Indigenous Matters (EGIM) at the Council’s Indigenous Matters Summit held in Adelaide in October 2019. The Declaration outlines key themes and commitments and calls upon archival collections and institutions around the world to acknowledge, adopt and implement the Declaration.
The Declaration calls on all staff to decolonise collections. It is the responsibility of all collecting organisations to decolonise collections by:
a. Reimaging collections as an engaging model of social memory
b. Embracing Indigenous methods of knowledge creation, sharing and preservation
c. Challenging colonial ideologies in collections
This workshop will provide a space for participants to share, learn and be inspired to take action and implement the Tandanya Declaration in daily archival practice and the workplace. Join together with people from a wide variety of archives, in roles such as community engagement, acquisition, collection management, preservation and access specialists to discuss, workshop and gather practical ideas of what can be done to implement the Tandanya Declaration in the workplace. The workshops will use Indigenous ways of knowledge sharing and communicating and will be underpinned by philosophies such as Yindyamarra - the Wiradjuri word meaning respect, to go slowly, be gentle and polite, and to honour life.
Workshop facilitators are Kylie Moloney and Robyn Garcia.
