Responding to recent closures of some university archival education programs, in late 2021 the ASA Accreditation and Professional Training Committee commissioned Dr Jan Murray to review trends in Australian archival education. The national and international training scenario, both vocational and tertiary, is part of the focus of this panel. Other aspects of the education challenge include training staff currently working in the sector who don't have qualifications or have cognate qualifications; continuing professional development for qualified archivists; the balance between producing qualified archivists and encouraging research and a research culture; and incorporating varying emerging skills, both hard and soft, such as digital archiving and cultural competence. Questions put to our panel include:How can we ensure an archival qualification will further a career? How can qualifications be designed to support a diverse workforce, opento building new skills and knowledge? Without research, the profession cannot develop. How will the quality and relevance of research in archival science be affected by fewer archival education programs producing fewer graduates?Without a research culture, how will educators be identified, develop and survive in the academy?
