The National Film and Sound Archive identified 2025 as the point when digitisation of physical time-based media collections would become significantly challenging. The critical driver is technology obsolescence. Manufacturing of playback equipment for video and audio formats has long ceased, second-hand machines and parts are disappearing at an alarming rate, and the number of experienced audiovisual operators and engineers is dwindling to compound the problem. Successfully transitioning audiovisual content from physical media to digital archives starts with a professional digitisation program. Knowledge of the digitisation process will ensure that quality outcomes are achieved, project expectations are met, and you can budget for the program. For some, however, digitising videotape, film and audio tape is not a familiar task and deters people from taking the necessary steps to start the migration process. Unfortunately, we no longer have the benefit of time to put digitisation off until later. In this workshop, we will share with participants what an AV digitisation project looks like, highlighting the steps in transforming content from a physical media collection to a digital archive. We will highlight the immediate threats facing physical media archives and discuss the pressing issue of why organisations need to act today to preserve content. The workshop will walk attendees through an AV digitisation project framework. It provides practical and tangible steps to equip participants with the knowledge to develop an AV digitisation program. We will explore the stages for developing a digitisation project plan - from understanding your collection to the ongoing preservation of your digital video and sound collection. By the end of the session, attendees should understand the physical to digital transformation process for an AV collection. DAMsmart will run the workshop at their facility in Mitchel. Attendees will be given a tour of the facility as part of the workshop to see how a specialised AV digitisation and preservation facility operates. About DAMsmart: DAMsmart has helped GLAMR, government and commercial organisations, like the State Records NSW, the State Library of WA, the National Archives of Australia, the State Library NSW, SBS, ABC Archives, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and so many more, to digitise content held on videotape, film and audio tape – making it accessible today and preserving it for the future.
