Nā te iwi, mā te iwi! By the tribe, for the tribe!

Abstract

The Ngāi Tahu Archive team is dedicated to working with and for Ngāi Tahu communities to help preserve our history, reclaim our heritage, and protect our tribal knowledge. Established in 1978, the Ngāi Tahu Archive comprises collections of the former Ngaitahu Maori Trust Board, records of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, and personal papers of selected individuals. Through digitisation, it is also becoming a repository for archives of tribal significance repatriated from external institutions. In addition to gathering at-risk information and protecting the physical integrity of archival material, the Archive is actively engaged in a range of projects with our tribal communities that make Ngāi Tahu knowledge accessible to tribal members and the wider world. Since 2020 the Ngāi Tahu Archive has been co-located with Archives New Zealand in their Christchurch office. This important Te Tiriti partnership has benefitted both parties. Join Co-Managers of the Ngāi Tahu Archive Helen Brown and Takerei Norton, and Archives New Zealand Regional Manager Jo Condon as they traverse the history of the Ngāi Tahu Archive, showcase its archival and research outputs, and discuss aspirations for the future.
