Melbourne's Secrets

Marian, Co-Convenor

Two recommendations for your Melbourne visit – walking tours of the CBD (historical, food, sport, etc), and the Australian Music Vault: Arts Centre Melbourne!

An out of town one - the view from Wonga (Arthurs Seat) on a sunny day.

Layers! Dress for all four seasons in one day, with multiple layers.  Walk the bluestone laneways and discover all the wonderful, unique boutique shops and coffee places.  Do the chocolate walking tour or just hang out upstairs at Koko Black in the Royal Arcade.

As a dumpling fan, I would recommend ShanDong MaMa Mini in the Centre Place laneway off Flinders Lane. Magnificent freshly made dumplings with lots of flavour.

Chris

Too many, but the ones I will share are the magical restaurant tucked in the laneway of the old Melbourne GPO, and

ShanDong MaMa Mini (sister to Shandong Mama Bourke Street).

Elliot

Not really a secret, but Bakemono Bakers is always worth a trip. Grab a tasty treat and a coffee before checking out the State Library’s incredible reading room!

Julie

Beyond the MCG go explore the Yarra’s riverside streets in Kew to discover Melbourne’s mid-century architectural heritage in a leafy inner city (kind of) setting. Several houses designed by McGlashan Everist, the firm responsible for the magnificent Heide II, home of John and Sunday Reed, are well preserved and loved by their lucky residents. Heide Museum itself is another Melbourne gem well worth a visit although further afield in Bulleen. Bayside Beaumaris is also a treat for lovers of mid-century design.

For food treats go no further than Cibi in Collingwood for delicious, healthy, home style Japanese cooking plus a wonderful store of gorgeous Japanese homewares all easily accessible via the number 86 tram from Bourke St in the CBD.

Melissa

Probably not a secret but I love The Fox Hotel in Collingwood for great pub food and an eclectic atmosphere.

At the end of a day of sightseeing, pop in to State of Grace for a drink and find the bookshelf. If you pick the right book it could transport you to a new level...

Susannah

Melbourne is best seen on foot, taking in the beautiful streets, architecture and parks. Susannah’s go-to recommendation is the bathrooms on level 35 of the Sofitel (seriously!), and recommends bringing an umbrella, regardless of the forecast.

Theresa

As an icecream aficionado, the original 7Apples gelato store in St Kilda is highly recommended.

Violet

Cam’s Kiosk, a cafe and restaurant on the Abbotsford Convent grounds, is a truly special Melbourne secret. After exploring Melbourne’s social welfare history, or listening to the Indigenous sound trail self-guided tour, pop into Cam’s to take it all in (with pasta).
